How to simplify a ratio

A ratio compares two quantities. To simplify a ratio, divide both values by their greatest common divisor when working with whole numbers.

Simplified ratio = A ÷ GCD : B ÷ GCD

Step-by-step calculation

1
Enter the two values Enter the two quantities you want to compare.
2
Find the common divisor Find the greatest number that divides both values evenly.
3
Divide both values Divide each value by the greatest common divisor to produce the simplest ratio.

Example

Suppose you want to simplify the ratio 12:18.

Original ratio 12 : 18
Greatest common divisor 6
First number 12 ÷ 6 = 2
Second number 18 ÷ 6 = 3
Simplified ratio 2 : 3
