Adult BMI categories

For adults, BMI is commonly interpreted using fixed screening categories. These categories are intended to help assess weight status and do not diagnose an individual’s health condition.

BMI Category
Below 18.5 Underweight
18.5 – 24.9 Normal weight
25.0 – 29.9 Overweight
30.0 or higher Obesity

How BMI is calculated

BMI is a numerical measure calculated from a person’s weight and height. The standard adult BMI formula uses kilograms and metres.

BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height² (m²)

Imperial: BMI = Weight (lb) ÷ Height² (in²) × 703

Step-by-step

1
Choose your units Select metric if you want to enter kilograms and centimetres, or imperial for pounds, feet, and inches.
2
Enter height and weight Enter your current height and weight using the selected units.
3
Calculate BMI The calculator applies the standard BMI formula and displays the resulting value.
4
Review the category For adults, the result is compared with standard BMI screening ranges.

BMI example

For an adult weighing 70 kg with a height of 1.75 m, the calculation is:

Weight 70 kg
Height 1.75 m
Calculation 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75)
BMI 22.9
Adult category Normal weight

Important: BMI is a screening measure based on height and weight. It does not directly measure body fat and does not account for factors such as muscle mass, body composition, age, sex, pregnancy, or individual health circumstances. This calculator is intended for general informational use and is not medical advice or a diagnosis. Children and teenagers should not use adult BMI categories; BMI-for-age charts are used instead. If you have health concerns, speak with a qualified healthcare professional.
