Step-by-step calculation
What does TDEE mean?
TDEE stands for Total Daily Energy Expenditure. It is an estimate of the total number of calories your body uses in a typical day, including your resting energy needs and physical activity.
TDEE can be useful as a starting point for understanding daily calorie requirements. Actual energy needs can vary from day to day and between individuals.
How is TDEE calculated?
This calculator first estimates your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) using the Mifflin–St Jeor equation. BMR represents the estimated energy your body needs at rest.
Your BMR is then multiplied by an activity factor based on your selected activity level.
TDEE calculation example
Suppose a 30-year-old male weighs 70 kg and is 175 cm tall. If he is moderately active, an activity multiplier of 1.55 is used.
BMR = 700 + 1093.75 − 150 + 5
BMR ≈ 1649 calories/day
TDEE = 1649 × 1.55
TDEE ≈ 2556 calories/day
The estimated daily energy expenditure is approximately 2,556 calories per day.
Formula used
Female BMR = (10 × weight) + (6.25 × height) − (5 × age) − 161
TDEE = BMR × Activity Multiplier
Weight is measured in kilograms and height in centimetres for the formulas above.
