What Is Running Pace?
Running pace is the amount of time required to cover a unit of distance. It is commonly expressed as minutes per kilometer (min/km) or minutes per mile (min/mile).
For example, a pace of 6:00 min/km means you take approximately 6 minutes to cover each kilometer. A lower time per kilometer or mile means a faster pace.
Pace = total time ÷ distanceSpeed = distance ÷ total timePace, Speed and Finish Time
Pace and speed describe the same performance from different perspectives. Pace tells you how long a distance takes, while speed tells you how much distance you cover in a given amount of time.
| Example pace | Approximate speed | 5K time | 10K time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5:00 min/km | 12.0 km/h | 25:00 | 50:00 |
| 5:30 min/km | 10.9 km/h | 27:30 | 55:00 |
| 6:00 min/km | 10.0 km/h | 30:00 | 1:00:00 |
| 6:30 min/km | 9.2 km/h | 32:30 | 1:05:00 |
| 7:00 min/km | 8.6 km/h | 35:00 | 1:10:00 |
Common Running Distances
| Distance | Equivalent | Typical use |

| 5K | 3.11 miles | Popular race and fitness benchmark |
| 10K | 6.21 miles | Road race and endurance benchmark |
| Half marathon | 13.11 miles | 21.0975 km |
| Marathon | 26.22 miles | 42.195 km |

Using Pace for Race Training
Pace can help runners structure workouts and understand race targets. Easy runs are generally performed at a comfortable intensity, while tempo, threshold and interval sessions are faster. Your appropriate training pace depends on fitness, experience, terrain, weather and the purpose of the workout.
A race pace calculator can also help you translate a target finish time into the average pace needed to achieve it. Actual race pacing may vary because of hills, turns, aid stations, fatigue and changes in conditions.
Why your actual pace may vary
- Terrain and elevation changes
- Weather, heat and humidity
- Wind and running surface
- Fatigue and recovery
- Race-day strategy and pacing
- GPS measurement differences
How Accurate Is a Pace Calculator?
The arithmetic is straightforward when distance and elapsed time are known accurately. The calculated average pace is only as accurate as the distance and time measurements you enter.
GPS watches and phone apps can report slightly different distances because GPS accuracy varies with surroundings, signal conditions and device algorithms. For official races, measured course distance and official timing are the appropriate references.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good running pace?
There is no single good pace for everyone. A suitable pace depends on your fitness, experience, distance, terrain and training goal.
How do I calculate my pace per kilometer?
Divide your total elapsed time by the distance in kilometers. The calculator converts the result into minutes and seconds per kilometer.
How do I calculate my pace per mile?
Divide your total elapsed time by the distance in miles. The calculator can also convert an average kilometer pace to an equivalent mile pace.
What is the difference between pace and speed?
Pace is time per unit distance, such as min/km. Speed is distance per unit time, such as km/h.
How fast is a 5-minute kilometer?
A 5:00 min/km pace is equivalent to approximately 12 km/h or 7.46 mph.
What pace do I need for a 30-minute 5K?
A 30-minute 5K requires an average pace of 6:00 min/km, which is approximately 9:39 min/mile.
What pace is needed for a 2-hour half marathon?
A 2-hour half marathon requires an average pace of approximately 5:41 min/km or 9:09 min/mile.
What pace is needed for a 4-hour marathon?
A 4-hour marathon requires an average pace of approximately 5:41 min/km or 9:09 min/mile.
Can I use this calculator for walking?
Yes. The mathematical calculation works for any activity where you know distance and elapsed time. You can use it for walking, running, hiking, cycling or similar activities.
Why is my GPS pace different from my race pace?
GPS devices may record a slightly different distance from the official course distance. Your average pace can therefore differ from the official race result.
What is average pace?
Average pace is the total elapsed time divided by the total distance covered. It does not mean that every kilometer or mile was completed at exactly that pace.
Can pace predict my race finish time?
It can estimate a finish time if you maintain the same average pace for the entire distance. Actual race performance can differ because of fatigue, terrain, weather and pacing strategy.

Methodology
This calculator uses standard distance-time relationships. Pace is calculated from elapsed time divided by distance, while speed is calculated from distance divided by elapsed time. Kilometer-to-mile conversions use 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers.
Results are mathematical estimates based on the information entered and do not account for changes in pace during a workout or race.
