How to Choose a Conversion Calculator
Use the subject groups below to select the correct measurement type before converting. Keep the original value and unit visible so the converted result can be checked easily.
Why Unit Conversion Is Important
The same physical quantity can be represented using different units. Converting a value changes its numerical representation, not the underlying quantity.
Conversions are especially important when information from different sources is combined. Consistent units reduce hidden errors in later calculations.
Choosing the Correct Conversion
Identify the quantity, original unit, and target unit before converting. Length, area, and volume have different dimensional relationships and cannot use the same simple factor.
Temperature is another special case because some scales involve an offset as well as a scale factor. Use the appropriate conversion method for the quantity.
Checking Converted Values
After conversion, consider whether the result is sensible. An unexpectedly large or small value may indicate the wrong unit or quantity was selected.
Keep a record of the original value, original unit, target unit, and final result when the converted number will be used in a larger calculation.
Using Converted Values Elsewhere
Keep the unit attached to a value until the larger calculation is complete. This makes dimensional checks easier and helps another person review the work.
For specialized measurements, verify the definition or convention used by the source because a general conversion factor may not represent a product-specific or industry-specific definition.
Convert Units with Confidence
Identify the quantity, original unit, and target unit before converting. Check the final unit and use a rough estimate to catch an incorrect conversion.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about unit systems, dimensional conversions, temperature, area, volume, and conversion checks.
Does unit conversion change the actual quantity?
No. A correct conversion changes the numerical representation and unit, not the underlying quantity.
Why can't one factor be used for length and area?
Area has two dimensions, so the relationship differs from a one-dimensional length conversion. Volume has three dimensions.
Why are temperature conversions different?
Temperature scales can include an offset as well as a scale factor, so the conversion depends on the two scales.
How can I check a conversion?
Check both units, use a rough estimate, and confirm that the result has a sensible order of magnitude.
