What Is a Budget?

A budget is a plan for how your income will be allocated among expenses, savings, debt payments, investments, and other financial priorities over a specific period.

A monthly budget can help you understand where your money is going and how much remains after your planned allocations.

How Does the Budget Calculator Work?

The calculator adds all amounts entered across the different budget categories and compares the total with your monthly take-home income.

Remaining Amount = Monthly Income − Total Budget Allocations

Blank budget amounts are treated as zero. Negative amounts are also accepted and included in the total.

Budget Calculator Example

Suppose your monthly take-home income is 5,000 and your total planned budget allocations are 4,200.

5,000 − 4,200 = 800

Remaining Amount = 800

What Can You Add to a Budget?

You can add recurring and variable expenses such as housing, transportation, groceries, dining, debt payments, subscriptions, insurance, childcare, healthcare, entertainment, travel, and education.

You can also add planned allocations for emergency savings, retirement contributions, investments, vacation savings, education savings, or other goals.
