Car Fuel Economy Comparison Calculator | FreeCalz

Car Fuel Economy Comparison Calculator

Compare two cars by fuel economy, fuel consumption, theoretical driving range and estimated fuel cost using the figures you enter.

Important: This is a general vehicle-research and planning calculator. It does not provide manufacturer-certified fuel-economy figures and does not guarantee real-world mileage or fuel costs. Verify important vehicle information using a reliable specification source.

Compare Car Fuel Economy

Enter fuel economy and tank capacity for both cars. Fuel price and annual distance are optional.

What Is a Car Fuel Economy Comparison Calculator?

A car fuel economy comparison calculator helps compare the efficiency of two vehicles using their entered fuel-economy figures. This calculator uses km/L as the main input and also shows L/100 km for easier comparison.

It can estimate theoretical full-tank range and, when optional fuel-price and annual-distance values are supplied, estimate fuel spending. These are mathematical estimates rather than guarantees of actual vehicle performance.

Fuel Economy vs. Fuel Consumption

Fuel economy in km/L

km/L tells you how many kilometres a vehicle can travel using one litre of fuel. A higher value represents better fuel economy.

Fuel consumption in L/100 km

L/100 km tells you how many litres are needed for 100 kilometres. A lower value represents lower fuel consumption.

Conversion: L/100 km = 100 ÷ km/L

How the Calculator Works

Fuel consumption

Fuel Consumption = 100 ÷ Fuel Economy

Theoretical full-tank range

Range = Fuel Economy × Fuel Tank Capacity

Fuel cost per 100 km

Cost per 100 km = Fuel Consumption × Fuel Price per Litre

Annual fuel cost

Annual Cost = Annual Distance ÷ Fuel Economy × Fuel Price per Litre

Worked Example

Suppose Car A has 15.5 km/L and Car B has 12.5 km/L.

Car A: 100 ÷ 15.5 = 6.45 L/100 km
Car B: 100 ÷ 12.5 = 8.00 L/100 km

Car A therefore requires less fuel for the same distance. At a fuel price of 2.18 per litre, the estimated cost is about 14.06 per 100 km for Car A and 17.44 per 100 km for Car B.

How to Make a Fair Car Fuel Economy Comparison

Use figures for the same model year and, where possible, the same engine, transmission, drivetrain and trim. Also check the testing standard used for the published figure.

  • Check the exact engine and transmission.
  • Check drivetrain configuration.
  • Use the same measurement unit.
  • Check model year and market specification.
  • Do not treat published mileage as guaranteed everyday mileage.

Factors That Affect Real-World Fuel Economy

  • Driving speed, acceleration and braking.
  • Traffic and stop-start conditions.
  • Passengers, luggage and vehicle load.
  • Tyre pressure and tyre selection.
  • Road gradients, weather and wind.
  • Air-conditioning and electrical loads.
  • Vehicle condition and maintenance.
  • Driving style and route selection.
  • Differences between standardized testing and actual road use.

What This Calculator Does and Does Not Calculate

It calculates

Fuel consumption, theoretical full-tank range, estimated fuel cost per 100 km and estimated annual fuel cost when optional inputs are supplied.

It does not calculate

Actual road-test mileage, maintenance costs, depreciation, insurance, financing, resale value, emissions certification or total ownership cost.

Understanding the Results

A higher km/L value indicates better fuel economy. A lower L/100 km value indicates lower fuel consumption. A larger tank can increase potential range but does not itself improve fuel efficiency.

Annual fuel cost depends on the fuel price and annual distance entered. If either changes, the estimate changes.

Accuracy, Assumptions and Limitations

The calculator uses only the numbers entered by the user. It does not automatically verify vehicle specifications or current fuel prices. Range assumes the entered fuel-economy value remains constant.

For important purchase decisions, verify the exact model year, engine, transmission, drivetrain, trim and market specification using appropriate reliable sources.

Common Mistakes When Comparing Fuel Economy

  • Confusing km/L with L/100 km.
  • Comparing different engine or transmission versions.
  • Mixing testing standards without checking the difference.
  • Assuming published mileage equals real-world mileage.
  • Assuming a larger tank means better fuel efficiency.
  • Using an outdated fuel price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which car has better fuel economy?

The car with the higher km/L value has better fuel economy when both values use the same unit.

How do I convert km/L to L/100 km?

Divide 100 by the km/L value.

Does a bigger fuel tank mean better fuel economy?

No. Tank size affects potential range; fuel economy measures efficiency.

Can I estimate annual fuel cost?

Yes. Enter fuel price per litre and annual driving distance.

Why is real-world mileage different?

Traffic, speed, driving style, load, tyres, weather, air-conditioning and vehicle condition can affect fuel use.

Can I compare petrol and diesel cars?

Yes, using the appropriate economy figure and fuel price.

Can I compare hybrid cars?

Yes. Use the published figure for the exact hybrid configuration.

Does this calculator automatically fetch vehicle data?

No. All vehicle figures are entered manually and no vehicle-data API is used.

Does it predict exact real-world fuel cost?

No. It provides an estimate based on the entered values.

What is the difference between km/L and L/100 km?

km/L measures distance per litre, so higher is better. L/100 km measures litres per 100 km, so lower is better.

Calculation Method and Data Sources

The calculator uses basic arithmetic and does not depend on an external vehicle-data API. Vehicle specifications should be checked against manufacturer documentation, an owner’s manual or another reputable specification source.

For important vehicle decisions, verify the exact model, engine, transmission, drivetrain, trim, market and testing standard.
