What Is a Car Comparison Calculator?

A car comparison calculator helps you compare two or three vehicles using a few important basic factors. This FreeCalz calculator uses car brand, fuel type, mileage or EV range, and seating capacity to produce a simple comparison score.

Instead of looking at each specification separately, the calculator converts the selected information into comparable scores and produces an overall result.

Why Compare Cars?

Choosing between two or more cars can be difficult when their specifications are different. A structured comparison can make the decision easier by showing where each vehicle performs better according to the selected criteria.

  • Compare two cars side by side.
  • Add a third car for a three-way comparison.
  • Compare different fuel types.
  • Compare mileage or EV driving range.
  • Consider seating capacity.
  • Get a simple overall comparison score.

How Does the Car Comparison Calculator Work?

The calculator assigns a predefined FreeCalz rating to the selected brand and fuel type. Mileage or range and seating capacity are then normalized against the highest value entered in the comparison.

Comparison Weights

  • Brand Score: 30%
  • Fuel Type Score: 25%
  • Mileage / Range Score: 30%
  • Seating Capacity Score: 15%

Overall Score Formula

Overall Score = (Brand Score × 0.30) + (Fuel Score × 0.25) + (Mileage/Range Score × 0.30) + (Seating Score × 0.15)

Mileage / Range Score

Mileage / Range Score = (Car Mileage or Range ÷ Highest Entered Mileage or Range) × 100

Seating Score

Seating Score = (Car Seating Capacity ÷ Highest Entered Seating Capacity) × 100

How Are Brand Ratings Determined?

The calculator uses internal FreeCalz comparison ratings to provide a simple mathematical comparison. These ratings are not official manufacturer ratings and should not be interpreted as independent safety, reliability, or quality certifications.

The brand rating is only one part of the total score. Your actual purchase decision should also consider price, safety, warranty, reliability, comfort, maintenance cost, performance, resale value and local availability.

Car Comparison Example

Suppose you compare three cars with the following simplified inputs:

  • Car 1: Toyota, Petrol, 18 km/l, 5 seats
  • Car 2: Hyundai, Diesel, 22 km/l, 5 seats
  • Car 3: Tata, EV, 400 km/charge, 5 seats

The calculator converts each factor into a score, applies the specified weights, and identifies the vehicle with the highest overall score.

Important Note About Mileage and EV Range

Petrol and diesel mileage is normally expressed as kilometres per litre (km/l), while EV performance is commonly expressed as kilometres per charge.

These measurements are not directly equivalent physical efficiency measurements. This calculator uses a simplified normalized comparison so that users can include the entered mileage or range as one factor in a basic comparison.

Therefore, the result should be treated as a comparison aid rather than a scientific measurement of vehicle energy efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cars can I compare?
You can compare two cars or three cars. Car 1 and Car 2 are required, while Car 3 is optional.
What information does the calculator require?
You only need to enter the car brand, fuel type, mileage or EV range, and seating capacity.
Does the calculator use an API?
No. The calculator works entirely in your browser and does not require a vehicle database API.
What fuel types are supported?
The calculator supports Petrol, Diesel and EV.
How is the best car selected?
The car with the highest calculated overall score is identified as the best car based on the factors included in this calculator.
Does a higher mileage always mean a better car?
No. Mileage is only one factor in this calculator. The final score also considers brand, fuel type and seating capacity.
Is the brand score an official rating?
No. The brand score is a simplified FreeCalz comparison rating and is not an official safety, reliability or manufacturer rating.
Does this calculator consider car price?
No. Vehicle price, financing, insurance, maintenance, safety, performance and resale value are not included in the current basic calculator.
Can I compare an EV with a petrol or diesel car?
Yes. However, EV range and fuel mileage use different measurement concepts. The calculator therefore provides only a simplified normalized comparison.
Is the result a recommendation to buy a car?
No. The result is an informational comparison based only on the factors included in the calculator. Always verify the latest specifications and consider your personal requirements before purchasing a vehicle.
