How to calculate compound interest

Compound interest calculates interest on the original principal and on interest accumulated during previous compounding periods.

A = P(1 + r/n)nt
Compound Interest = A − P

A is the final amount, P is the principal, r is the annual interest rate expressed as a decimal, n is the number of compounding periods per year, and t is the time in years.

Step-by-step calculation

1
Enter the principal amount Enter the initial amount invested, deposited, or borrowed.
2
Enter the annual interest rate Enter the yearly interest rate as a percentage.
3
Enter the time period Enter the number of years. Decimal values are supported.
4
Choose the compounding frequency Select annually, semi-annually, quarterly, monthly, or daily.
5
Convert the result if needed The principal, interest, and final amount are converted using the same exchange rate.

Example

Suppose you invest $1,000 at 5% annual interest for 3 years, compounded monthly.

Principal $1,000.00
Annual interest rate 5%
Time 3 years
Compounding Monthly
Interest earned $161.47
Final amount $1,161.47
