What is a trigonometric function?

Trigonometric functions describe relationships between angles and sides of triangles. The three most common trigonometric functions are sine, cosine, and tangent.

In addition to these functions, inverse trigonometric functions can be used to find an angle when a trigonometric ratio is known.

How is a trigonometric value calculated?

The calculator first identifies the selected function and angle mode. It then applies the appropriate trigonometric formula and calculates the numerical result.

For degree input, the angle is converted to radians internally because JavaScript’s mathematical functions use radians.

Trigonometric calculator example

Suppose you want to calculate the sine of 30 degrees.

sin(30°)

Convert 30° to radians:
30 × π ÷ 180 = π ÷ 6

Therefore:
sin(π ÷ 6) = 0.5

Therefore, the sine of 30 degrees is 0.5.

Formula used

Sine:
sin(θ) = opposite ÷ hypotenuse

Cosine:
cos(θ) = adjacent ÷ hypotenuse

Tangent:
tan(θ) = opposite ÷ adjacent

Inverse sine:
θ = sin⁻¹(x)

Inverse cosine:
θ = cos⁻¹(x)

Inverse tangent:
θ = tan⁻¹(x)
